Korean Works
2010 – 2015
In this exhibition I presented a selection of work produced between
2010 and 2015 with Korean themes. I arrived for the first time in Korea
in early 2008 on an art residency and stayed three months. In 2010 I
returned for another residency and also began teaching as a Guest
Professor. I have lived and worked in Korea for most of the
time since then.
My work always shows an interest in the historical, and I was
immediately fascinated by the rich history of Korea, and over the past
five years has made a number of works which reflect his interest in
Korean culture.
In this exhibition a number of themes emerge:
- early Western perceptions of Korea, as, for example,
recorded in books published about the country by Westerners -
the ‘Korean White’ series, ‘Captions’ hanging-scrolls, ’Natural
History’ watercolours
- the Korean War (in which British troops were involved) -
‘Border, 1945’, ‘Diamond Mountain’, the ‘Pavilion’ series
- North Korea - the video, ‘Horizon’
- East Asian concepts of art, especially in relation to text
and image, the concept of ‘void’, and Buddhism
- East Asian techniques and formats (such as the scroll).
