The Works
The Korean White Series (2010)
8 paintings based on books written by foreigners during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century about Korea. Shades of white were chosen because white is the characteristically traditional Korean colour.
The Korean War Series (2011)
Two paintings based on books written during the Korean War. ‘The Truth about Korea’ was written by an American academic in 1950, ‘Korea Through British Eyes’ (1952) by an academic from Ewha Women’s University who was visiting my country to explain to the British why they were fighting in Korea.
The Zen Series (2003)
Three paintings were made before I visited East Asia, and reflected my Western perception of what ‘East Asia’ is.
The Great Artists Series (2012)
10 paintings based on catalogues of famous artists.
‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ Triptych (2012)
Originally made for the Poznan Mediations Biennial in Poland, this triptych takes as its theme the famous work by Friedrich Nietzsche.
Selected ‘Paragraph-Paintings’ (2000-)
6 framed works. I substitute rectangles of flat colour for the paragraphs of text on real book pages.
Taboo (2005)
A video in which Sigmund Freud’s famous work ‘Totem and Taboo’ is burned.
