On a more personal level, it occurs to me that these paintings are also about my feelings for my mother when I was a child. She was an actress and spent a lot of time away from home. I was often
looked after by a nanny, and would wait with mounting excitement for the moment when my mother returned. Recently, in a conversation with my sister, I found myself saying that compared to
this nanny my mother seemed now in my memory to be like a‘golden’ presence . .
